Kava Kava
Piper methysticum
I could talk about Kava Kava all day, in fact I nicknamed Kava: Gabby Gabby. To me, the magic behind this wild root speaks wonders. The best way to describe this in a short synopsis is “used to soothe public speaking nerves”. Kava calms anxiety, uplifts despondency (low spirits), and has a warming/numbing affect.. you really feel it!
Kava Kava root contains a scientific compound known as kavalactones, are known to have various psychotropic effects, which include stroking the limbic system, the part of our brain which regulates feelings of anxiety and fear. The kavalactones also sedate and induce a light feeling of euphoria when taken in the correct dosage. However, these lactones must be consumed with caution as they filter through our liver at a high potency. Over-consumption, although not likely with a small tincture bottle, can cause liver damage.
Although Kava is relaxing it has a subtle stimulating affect, which allows you to slow down and breathe, yet initiates motivation to tackle a task. It allows you to relax socially, but promotes confidence and calmness. The numbing is felt primarily on the tongue; it is described as warm and relaxing numbness, which helps you articulate and focus on calming down because you become (more) aware of your mouth. The sedation lasts only for a few minutes and is sometimes felt at the back of the throat as well.
Kava takes you out of your head and helps you feel present and in control. The power of Kava is why it is my favorite.
